I volunteered as a photographer for a graduate exhibition, and it was the first time I had access to a high-end camera. It was interesting working in this medium given my experience in design, film, and narrative. Each of these three domains has been influenced by the visual medium of photography.
Photography has a journalistic flair for documenting daily living. It is an observation of society, events, people or activities. Unlike working with design for software through the use of images, graphics or layouts. Photography focuses the observer on being able to frame the composition, working with the elements to capture a setting.
Living in the hyper age of content and images, taking a moment to view a single picture can give a prompt of interpretative observation of the subject in a picture, deriving an overall conception of the larger meaning behind the frame. Prior to photography, art was used to convey the likeness and document society. Graphic novels are an interesting mix of photography quality and artistic graphics conveying a story from iconography and mood achieved by aesthetics.
A more recent emergence in the digital landscape as of 2022 is in-game photography, which is photography of virtual landscapes. My perception of photography will always allude to the all-time sci-fi classic Blade Runner where Deckard using a device allows him to view and enlarge details in the picture and being able to zoom in on a mirror to snap a reflection of the subject.
